Dagan to Remain Head of Mossad

01/05/09
(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu intends to extend the term of Mossad intelligence chief Meir Dagan, according to Maariv/nrg. Dagan is already finishing a one-year extension, and the extension makes him one of the longest-standing heads of the organization.

Follow up:

The news service says Netanyahu has expressed appreciation in private conversations for the job Dagan has done and the way he has turned the organization around. Dagan has won praise in a number of circles, especially for his handling of Iran's threats against Israel. A senior associate of the prime minister said "It's not right during such a critical period to replace a Mossad chief, especially a successful one."

Among the feathers in Dagan's cap are Israel's recent destruction of an Iranian arms convoy in Sudan and information that lead to Egypt's arrest of a Hizbullah terror cell. Intelligence played a key role in Israel's destruction of a Syrian nuclear site, and Hizbullah blames the Mossad for the elimination of arch-terrorist Imad Mughniyeh.
